Web Intelligence Tutorial – Introduction to Reporting

Web Intelligence or WEBI is the reporting tool of Business Objects used for reporting and analysis. Web Intelligence can be used to create reports using already created universe. It allows user to query data using business terminology. User can get the required data just by dragging and dropping the object on web intelligence query panel. It allows user to generate ad-hoc reports without the knowledge of database or SQL.

What is Infoview?

Infoview is a web portal from where user can access web intelligence documents, crystal reports. It can be viewed as a BI portal.

Creating Reports using Web Intelligence.

There are two ways you can create web intelligence document. Either by using web intelligence rich client which a desktop version of web intelligence or by accessing web intelligence through browser.

Creating new web intelligence document using rich client.

To create new web intelligence document first we need to start the rich client. To start rich client

1. Start the rich client from Start-> All Programs->Business Objects 3.1->Web Intelligence Rich Client

2. Enter the following details

  • System – It’s the CMS name.
  • User Name – User name as provided by administrator
  • Password – Password
  • Authentication Mode- It’s based on what is set in your environment.
    • Enterprise – Its CMS based authentication. Contact BO Administrator for this
    • Windows AD – Windows based
    • Windows NT – Windows based
    • LDAP – Active Directory based
    • Standalone – If you do not want to connect to CMS want to work locally you can choose this

There are three ways you can start the rich client based on whether you want to connect to CMS or want to work on local resources.

Connected: In this rich client is actually connected to CMS. In this mode you can export/import documents.

Offline: In offline mode rich client does not connects to the repository (CMS). However CMS security is still

imposed on documents and universes. You cannot import or export document in this mode.

Standalone: In this, rich client is not connected to CMS. You can work on any local document or unsecured documents.

Now we have started the rich client. To create a document.

1. After logging in to rich client.

2. Click File->New

3. Select the data source for the report. (Universe, Text/Excel File, Web Services.)

4. If you have selected Universe as data source. Select the universe from the list of universes.

5. From query editor select the objects you want to include in report

6. Click on “Run Query” to run the report.

7. Result of query will be showed in table format in report.

8. Now save the report wither to local file system or export to CMS

  • To Save locally File-Save
  • To export to CMS File->Export

While saving the report locally, rich client gives 4 save option as

Refresh on Open – Means very time report is opened the report data will be updated by re-executing the report.

Permanent Region Formatting – The local formatting will be attached to report permanently. Now if the report is opened on different computer which has different locale. The report will be displayed with current regional formatting will instead computers locale.

Save For All Users – This option makes report available in standalone mode. It removes all security from report.

Remove Document Security – All default security is removed from document.
