Semantic Data Model or layer.

Semantic Data Model differ application to application used for reporting. Most the Business Intelligence tools have their own standards to design a semantic layer which will be used for reporting purpose. Semantic Data Model represents the physical data model in business terminologies, so that it can be used by business peoples to do reporting.

Designing a Semantic Data Model is challenging job as the designer really needs to know the physical data model and business terminology very well.

The objective of semantic data model is to create a semantic layer between actual data model in which data is stored and represent the table and columns in business terms for ease of reporting.

E.g Universe in SAP Business Objects is Semantic Data Model
